Functionality will be key

"In the last 10 years, one of the biggest changes has been a move toward bigger, fewer accessories, a cleaner, less-cluttered look," said Kathy Barry, owner of Home Life Interiors, based in Kentwood.

Barry always has been anti-trend, suggesting her clients lean toward high-quality, classic pieces that will last for years. If clients want to go faddish, accessories such as pillows or draperies don't cost a bundle and can be replaced every couple of years, she said.

That philosophy bodes well in today's economy and complements the green movement. People are choosing to reupholster items instead of buying new, Barry said.
